1. Clicks vs. Scroll
Do you remember how hard it was scrolling webpages? Painstakingly you had to move the mouse over to the right edge of the screen to something ancient called the ‘scrollbar’. Puke. If you were ahead of most users you probably used a mouse wheel, cursor keys or even a track-pad.
Now it’s far easier to scroll than it is to click. We all scroll, all day, on our mobile devices using our thumbs or index finger. However, clicking has actually become more difficult; total opposite of how it used to be on the good old desktop.
So remember to design around scrolling first, clicking second. This trend is bound to stick around for a long time. Modern sites will have fewer things to click and include much more scrolling. Expect to see less links, more buttons, larger clickable areas and tall pages that are designed with an infinite scroll page.
2. The fold is irrelevant.
In case you don’t know what ‘the fold’ is… The fold is the top part of a website (aka ‘the first impression’)
Now that scrolling is so easy, the fold has become completely irrelevant!
Instead of cramming most important content near the top of the website, graphic designers are now able to use this space in a more create way. Most popular trend visible is the full screen image or video with a bold title excluding content until you start scrolling. Magazine like tall webpages are now filled with large beautiful imagery.
3. The pixel is dead.
What is a pixel? Nowadays fewer people know what a pixel is because it no longer is a ‘issue’ in the web world.
A pixel was … a pixel. If you take 1 square inch of your desktop screen you would have a total of 72 pixels in that square. So images uploaded to the web should be no more or less than 72 pixels per square inch for best resolution.
Now, with responsive design we have moved towards grids and percentages rather than pixels. With Retina displays and modern browsers, website loads faster and automatically scales the images to any size without losing quality.
4.E-mail Subscription lists
Social media has become a huge success for consumers but on the flip side the producers are so happy.
With billions of posts every day, Facebook saturation has become so advanced that it learnes which users are most likely to enjoy the post and only show it to a select few. This mean over time based on your audiences likes and interests, your posts are increasingly seen by a smaller percentage of your followers. Annoying Right? Well there is a solution; if the budget allows. You can pay Facebook to release your posts to a larger group of people.
Clearly social media is going anywhere but instead of paying for a larger reach on Facebook posts you can invest a little elbow grease into email marketing. Email lists have one huge advantage over social media; a significantly higher percentage of people will see what you sent them and since they singed up to receiving your email they are more likely to view it.
You can create a free account with MailChimp to start your email list today. It is easy to navigate and provides you with code that can be integrated to your WordPress website as a sign up form. From there you can set up automatic RSS email blasts directly from your blog to the consumer without ever having to think about it ever again!
